The best time to visit Nusa Penida

Dry season or rainy season? A local guide to weather, crowds and the best time of day to explore Nusa Penida.

Nusa Penida is beautiful all year, but the season you choose changes how your day feels: how calm the sea is for the boat ride, how dusty or muddy the roads are, and how clear the water is for snorkeling.

Dry season: April to October

This is the most popular time to visit. Days are usually sunny, the roads are dry, and the sea is often clear, which makes it a great time for snorkeling and for photos at Kelingking and Diamond Beach.

  • Best for: first-time visitors, photography, snorkeling
  • Keep in mind: July and August are the busiest months, so start early to beat the crowds

Rainy season: November to March

Rain usually comes in short, heavy showers, often in the afternoon, with plenty of sunshine in between. The island turns green and there are fewer visitors at the viewpoints.

  • Best for: quieter viewpoints, green landscapes
  • Keep in mind: the sea can be rougher, and boat or snorkeling trips are sometimes rescheduled for safety
If your boat or snorkeling trip is cancelled because of the weather, we will move your trip to another day or give you a full refund.

Best time of day

Leave early. The fast boat from Sanur departs around 08:00, so you reach the first viewpoints before the midday heat and the biggest crowds. Kelingking is at its quietest in the morning.

What to bring

  • Comfortable shoes with good grip (the steps at Kelingking and Diamond Beach are steep)
  • Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses
  • Swimwear and a small towel if you plan to snorkel
  • Cash for the island tax and small purchases
